Shakuhachi Lessons: In-Person and Online
Shakuhachi Lessons are taught both online via SKYPE and in-person in the Buffalo, Niagara, and Western New York area. Joshua M. Smith, Phd., is a professional shakuhachi teacher with years of performing and teaching experience in Japan.
From Winter 2011, I will offer lessons at our Dojo, or school, in Grand Island, NY. After establishing two studios in Nara, Japan, the family and I will be returning to the Buffalo area, and I will continue teaching my current Japanese and international students via the Internet. You can view my detailed Shakuhachi Profile Here. What you will need for online lessons: ・SKYPE is a free and reliable service. So click on the Skype button and download the software. ・Most new computers have a decent Webcam already installed in them. This should be good enough for lessons. ・I use a mac and recommend the Logitech products for both the web cam and the microphone. ・Most computers do not have great speakers though so USB attachable speakers would be a good investment. ・Lesson are paid for via PAYPAL. Open a free account here, or pay via check or money order. ・Please fill out the form below to inquire about arranging lesson times. I currently have both male and female students from the ages of 10 ~ 72. We focus on both deep meditative breathing as well as musicianship. Through private shakuhachi lessons you learn how to both increase your concentration levels as well as relax. The shakuhachi can be a great way to relieve stress while exploring yourself and these wonderful, mysterious sounds. I teach the traditional Japanese meditative solo pieces (honkyoku), modern pieces, and other traditional Japanese songs. I focus on the Kinko School's traditional and modern music, such as the classical pieces of Fukuda Rando. If you don't already own a shakuhachi I can guide you in the direction of finding an appropriate one for shakuhachi classes. Everyone's situation is different, but I believe that the more time and money you put into something, the more serious you'll take it, and the more you'll get back from it. Shakuhachi Lesson Prices ・All private lessons, both online and in-person, are $50 per hour. ・Twice a month I will teach in-person in the traditional Japanese style. This involves setting the time and having lessons on a first-come-first-serve basis. There is no set time for this lesson, sometimes it is short and sometimes you will have more time. It differs from a group lesson because everyone is still taught one-on-one, but with the benefit of being able to observe other players and learn from their lessons if you wish to. These lessons are $30 each.
