Moss Gardens - Vibrant Shades of Green For Your Serene Space

The Moss Gardens provide a beautiful green carpet that both revitalizes and refreshes the senses. In Japan, moss has a very special place in many gardens. It is appreciated like no where else in the world.

They are not 100% maintenance free, some weeding may be necessary. However, not to the degree that people go to taking care of their grass lawns; mowing, fertilizing...

Another misconception is that they only survive in humid areas. Japan is a very humid country, so the types of moss that grow there are stimulated by the moisture in the air, but that doesn't mean you can't grow moss in dryer areas.

They do thrive in shadier areas, but there are even species, such as Polytrichum, that will do fine in sunnier areas.

In Japan, moss gardens are often seen in varying degrees in Japanese gardens. Japanese gardens lend themselves to shade gardens, where mystery and serenity reside. Moss creates a solid base of vibrant greens which add a smooth, refined, clean feeling that is essential in traditional gardens.

Gravel, sand, and rock gardens compliment moss very well also. In a sea of sand and gravel moss mounds represent mountains and islands.

One of the most famous Japanese gardens is at a temple in Kyoto called Saihoji, or commonly known as Koke-dera (The Moss Temple). This garden forest of moss is only accessible via reservation, as to limit the amount of foot traffic in order to preserve the various species of moss.

We highly recommend anyone interested in moss gardens to explore the benefits of creating one. We will soon be offering you some recommended products to aid in the start of your new Serene Garden.
