Finding Serenity in Mahoroba
Mahoroba is the newly released shakuhachi CD by Josh Smith. This CD is a journey into the serene atmosphere of Nara, the birthplace of Japan. This music will bring you to a relaxing place and provide you with many benefits such as stress relief and tapping into your own sense of creativity and imagination.
“Mahoroba” is an old word referring to a far off paradise surrounded by mountains. In ancient times it was used to refer to Yamato, the previous name for Nara. Mahoroba is close to the term Arcadia, or utopia, where people live in bliss and in harmony with nature. The songs on this CD all relate to this concept and are a reflection of my experiences of living in Yamato. Click on the secure Paypal Button to begin this serene sound journey.
Brian Richie, bass player for the Violent Femmes and shakuhachi master/aficionado says that, "For me "Maharoba" is a success because it combines the Japanese training and discipline Josh underwent in both music and spirituality with his own personal expression in a holistic fashion. The album tends toward simplicity and calm, beautiful sounds and melodies..."

This CD is largely comprised of original pieces that Yamato has inspired me to create. The traditional honkyoku pieces are also related to my experiences of spiritual training with them in the mountains of Nara, primarily in Katsuragi and Yoshino.
