Japanese Rock Garden
The Japanese Rock Garden can be a way of creating a serene space of simplicity. This is but one style of the Japanese garden, but a highly aesthetic and sometimes philosophical one. Although these rock gardens are sometimes referred to as "zen gardens," their relationship with Zen and their symbolism have been embellished and overblown. Here is a picture of the head temple at Mt. Koya, a Shingon sect of Buddhism, not Zen:
I took the picture below at Toin in Nara, Japan, and is one of the oldest gardens still maintained. Although this rock garden is along the bank of the garden pond, the display and positioning of rocks is quite exquisite.
This picture was taken at the Japanese garden at Shitennoji, Osaka. This was late fall so the grass wasn't green but the rock formations in the sand/gravel and as well as the waterfall are quite nice.
