Family: Aceraceae
USDA hardiness zones 5-8
Native to Japan
There are over 400 kinds of Japanese maples, all with a wide variety of colors that both shine in the spring and become vibrant in the fall. Even in winter when the leaves fall, the interesting branch shapes bring about a new work of art for those wintery scenes.
These maples are great as specimen trees in the from yard and also do well in containers. Many Bonsai enthusists also revere the Japanese Red Maples.
Some varieties can grow to about 8 feet tall, however, with the right pruning they can be maintained around 3 to 4 feet. They do great in the sun, but it is best to avoid the afternoon sun as it can be too harsh for the leaves. Therefore, planting one on the eastern or northern side of the house would be ideal.
