In most spiritual practices throughout the world burning incense has been used to calm the mind and center you. This practice was brought to Japan in the late 500s through Buddhism and took hold with the Shinto tradition as well. It's modern day sister of aromatherapy has also become widespread.
Japanese incense is also used in everyday life as well. You can use it to freshen and brighten an area as well as for medicinal purposes. In creating your own serene space we shouldn’t overlook the wonderful and powerful sense of smell. We tend to take it for granted, but many memories and feelings are triggered by fragrances. There many different varieties of incense including strong, light, and sweet fragrances, as well as some that do not give off smoke (for people like my wife who are sensitive to the smoke). “Shoyeido” is one such 300-year-old Japanese company that makes quality incense. Visit that page to see various types of incense. The burning of incense has also become a stylized traditional art form, called Kodo, The Way of Incense. Even as this art form developed, incense has been associated with meditation for centuries throughout the world. Incense and Meditation and Spirituality
At Japanese temples and while meditating, incense is an important item that puts you in the right mindset. While in Shikoku when I walked the 88 Temples Pilgrimage (1400k) I offered meditative songs at each one of the temples Main Hall and Daishi-do, a hall for Kobo Daishi, Kukai. Bathing in the purifying incense, at each area I lit 3 incense sticks and offered meditative pieces.
Shinto also associates burning incense with spirituality. You can see to our left there is a large incense pot under a temple-like pavilion in front of the Shinto Torii Gate. This is directly in front of Nachi Falls on the Kumano Kodo, a World Heritage Site in Wakayama pref. The incense designates a sacred space and puts people in the right mind frame to relax and fully take in their surroundings and nature. Many people also burn incense at home privately to aid in meditation. It both creates the atmosphere as well as signals the duration of the meditation session. Good incense companies will say about how long a stick will burn for. Wether meditating or not, any home can benefit from the serene and mysterious fragrances of Japanese incense.
