Let Low Maintenance Bonsai Help Create Your Serene Space

Bonsai can really bring a piece of nature an art into your home creating your serene space. They are not really dwarfed plants, but are potted plants that are trimmed and trained, as opposed to genetically altering them to be miniature.

For those willing to put the time into it, this art will give you hours of fun and relaxation. It is a combination of discovering the inherent beauty of the tree as well as allowing your creativity to emerge. I encourage everyone to delve into this ancient tradition.

I recommend this great book because the author explains things in plain English and focuses on specific trees for beginners as well as indoor bonsai. He also deals with issues of interior decorating and accents for your bonsai at a very great price.

However, I also realize that some people are more interested in it as a home decorating item and are less inclined to give it the proper amount of time and dedication necessary to master this art. Traditionalists may smirk, but ultimately this is yours to create, display, and enhance your serene space. I have a few recommendations for low-maintenance bonsai that you can also display indoors. Most thrive outdoors where it has the right amount of light and temperature, but a combination of indoor/outdoor is also possible.

Low Maintenance Bonsai

Like the logo for our store Grand Island Serene Gardens, the Cherry Blossom is the perfect place for beginners to start. You can trim it or you can leave it in its natural state. There is a saying in Japan about only idiots trimming their sakura cherry blossom trees.

Another easy to maintain bonsai is the Azalea . They do like a slightly higher acidic soil content, but a common product like Miricid should do the trick. Azalea are very common in Japanese gardens as they can be sculpted quite nicely and they flower as well.

Although they are not traditional, Lucky Bamboo displays can be quite aesthetically pleasing and are the easiest thing to take care of. Visit here for more information on lucky bamboo.

Indoor Bonsai

Most require the outdoors as they are a part of nature and need that type of environment. However, there are some that can be kept inside and make great additions as a Japanese interior display.

Kusamaki (Podocarpus macrophyllus) comes from the southern areas of Japan in Kyushu and Okinawa. It resembles a pine but technically is not. This is common in larger Japanese gardens.

Jade can make one of the best indoor trees that are great for beginners. They are very resilient to harsh pruning and are not highly particular about watering.

One thing to keep in mind is that having the right pot or ceramic tray for display is very important. A nice piece of pottery to go with your bonsai will add a lot of sophistication to your interior decorating.

Japanese Holly or Box Holly (Ilex Crenata) is also a very durable indoor shrub. They are also capable of producing berries and white flowers.

One of our favorites is the Japanese Maple. These are some of the most beautiful trees to have around and are also very easy to take care of. You can go with simple and quaint, or larger and more extravagant.

"A tree that is left growing in its natural state is a crude thing. It is only when it is kept close to human beings who fashion it with loving care that its shape and style acquire the ability to move one." (Utsubo Monogatari, approximately written in 970)

This ancient Japanese belief also sums up the relationship with Japanese gardens in general. True beauty becomes apparent when nature clashes with art. Bonsai and Japanese gardens represent not nature in its purest sense, but our interpretation of nature.
